I am delighted to announce that I have been selected as one of seven composers for the 2024 RPS Composers Scheme. This fantastic opportunity will culminate in the creation of a new piece commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society for the Hebrides Ensemble, featuring the talented singer Lotte Betts-Dean.
For this piece, I will be exploring the fascinating theme of clothing construction, focusing on the intricate processes involved in creating garments. To bring this concept to life, Lotte will be using a sewing machine as part of the performance, adding a unique layer of texture and sound to the music. This interplay between the physical act of sewing and the musical score will allow us to delve into the emotional and sensory experience of making clothes—a process that reflects both personal expression and societal identity.
Sewing has been a significant part of my life, and it’s a practice I embrace in my spare time. As a queer person, it provides me with a creative outlet to design and construct clothing that isn’t bound by societal norms. This freedom to create allows me to feel comfortable in my own skin, as I can express my identity through the garments I make. The process of sewing is not just about fashion; it’s a deeply personal journey that resonates with my quest for self-acceptance and individuality.
This project aligns perfectly with my ongoing exploration of how art and identity intersect. By incorporating sewing into the musical composition, I aim to celebrate the joy of creating and the power of self-expression. I believe that clothing can serve as an extension of who we are, and I’m excited to share this perspective through my music.
I look forward to sharing more about this project as it evolves, and I hope you will join me on this journey of exploration and creativity!
