This month Jasper had to undergo a conducting assessment, under the guidance of Brass Band Conductor Dr.Robert Childs. For this exam Jasper had to orchestrate one of Janacek’s short Piano pieces for Orchestra. Having some prior experience of conducting with the NYOW he felt confident going into his exam and also received a high first from it.
From last month’s session with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Jasper had to revise his piece “Melys” and produce a full set of new parts. On the 18th & 19th of February Jasper was able to hear his piece again and have it performed in concert with the other composers pieces.
A excerpt of the piece can be found here:
This month also saw the opportunity for me to work with the Berkeley ensemble on my new piece “The Night is Dark”. Like “Melys” I used a painting as inspiration for the piece. Trying to explore the different colours and textures of the painting I construct the piece similarly with moments of exposed harmonics in the strings and warmer harmony in the winds.
