About

Originally from Devon, Jasper is a young composer studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where he is exploring the diverse world of contemporary classical music.

At the age of 9 Jasper started learning to play piano together with basic notation and harmony. His route into composition came from his development as a Baritone horn player for his local brass band. During practice he would try and examine the harmonic and textural content of the music being played around him. With Thomas Adés, Kaija Saariaho, Oliver Knussen and Helen Grime appearing to be his biggest influences in his music, Jasper looks at the sound world he creates from an abstract perspective; with intentions of leading the audience down a journey with many twists and turns.

Recipient of the inaugural “Paul Mealor award for Student Composers: 2018”
“Most Promising Young Composer of 2017” – Welsh Music Guild

Jasper is a hard working self-motivated composer with experience in a fast-paced environment. He is always very personable to players and professional under pressure. Driven to exceed goals and build quality relationships with performers, conductors and fellow composers, Jasper has an uncanny attention to detail.

From his experience of taking rehearsals and teaching ‘one to one’, Jasper is able to take on multiple responsibilities and pass on his knowledge to performers. His temperament allows him to look past what he has written to understand where changes are required for a piece to be played. He gets excited by the idea of working with performers and believes that collaboration in contemporary classical music is one of the most important factors in new music today.

Winner of the English Schools Composition Competition 2018
Winner of The Lord Lingfield Medal for music 2018
